So the support group meeting was not what I would have expected. I didn’t like it in the least bit. I felt like there were people who had their surgery, years ago in some cases, who felt that they were the law or the ones who know everything there is to know about surgery. This was very annoying to sit and listen to people who instead of sharing their experiences came off with an attitude about the surgery, as if it was a punishment to have the surgery. My only thought when I hear them complain on the soapbox, is WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT A SURGERY THAT WAS ELECTIVE?! Nobody forced anyone to have the surgery, and that should really mean that you should be thankful to have a new lease on life, and that you were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to have this surgery.
I can’t say it was all bad, some of the people who spoke were very informative and positive about their surgery and progress. One observation that I did make, they should have had a round table where each person introduces themselves to the group, I sat silent the entire time, there was no opportunity for me to speak, or even any acknowledgement from the other group members. But, I am sure for some people, going to the monthly meetings is very helpful to their continued success, so give it a try. Hopefully this was just an isolated incident.
